Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

What a fantastic week we have had here at CWES! We were honored to welcome our superintendent, Dr. Reid, for a visit that showcased the amazing things happening in our classrooms and beyond.

Dr. Reid had the opportunity to see firsthand the engaged learning environment in our classrooms. She visited a first-grade classroom, a kindergarten room, and a 4th-grade class. The energy and enthusiasm of our students were truly inspiring!

Her visit coincided perfectly with Earth Week celebrations. Dr. Reid joined students in exploring our beautiful outdoor garden, a space dedicated to environmental learning and sustainability. We were thrilled to share our students' passion for protecting our planet.

We are grateful to Dr. Reid for taking the time to visit our school. Her visit was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the dedication of our teachers and staff, as well as our incredible students!

This week, we also celebrated our administrative professionals. We consider ourselves fortunate to have such an amazing office staff that ensures a positive and productive environment for students, staff, and families. Their dedication, efficiency, and positive attitudes are truly invaluable. We sincerely appreciate all of their efforts to keep our school running smoothly!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

Last Monday, our school community came together for a truly unforgettable experience: witnessing a solar eclipse! There was immense excitement as students, teachers, and staff came together to observe this rare phenomenon.

Our teachers and staff played a crucial role in ensuring everyone's safety by providing proper eye protection and reminding students of important precautions. It was heartwarming to see the camaraderie and shared awe as our entire school community joined for this extraordinary event.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to making this day possible, especially our dedicated teachers and staff, enthusiastic students, and supportive families. We are also grateful to the generous parents who donated glasses, ensuring that everyone could participate in this amazing experience. Your contributions are truly valued.

Congratulations to our string students on their fantastic concert this week! The captivating sound they produced was truly impressive. Throughout the year, we have observed incredible growth from each of them, and this performance truly showcased their talent. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

What a busy short week we had! It was incredibly heartwarming to witness the excitement and joy radiating from our rising kindergarten students this week! We're eagerly looking forward to them joining our CWES community as the Class of 2037.

We also celebrated National School Librarian Day. Our librarian, Ms. Bauer, goes above and beyond to foster a love for reading and learning in our students. From recommending the perfect books to creating engaging library activities, she truly makes our school library a hub of knowledge and inspiration. We are so thankful for Ms. Bauer!

I would also like to acknowledge our incredible assistant principals, Ms. Milliron and Mrs. McGeehan, as we celebrate National Assistant Principals Week. They both play a vital role in helping our school community thrive. Their dedication, leadership, and unwavering support for both students and staff make a significant difference every day. I am grateful to work alongside them in supporting our school community.

You should have received an email yesterday with the CWES plan for viewing the Solar Eclipse on Monday. Additionally, teachers have shared information in their newsletters. We are looking forward to experiencing the event. Please make sure to review the safety reminders with your students.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Mindy Milliron, and Kristi McGeehan

🏫 Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

As we approach the end of the third quarter, we are incredibly proud of the amazing progress that our students have made in their academic and social-emotional development. It has been truly inspiring to see how our students have excelled in various subjects and approached challenges with confidence. Our students are also demonstrating great resilience, empathy, and self-awareness. We are excited to see what the fourth quarter has in store for them!

On Monday, March 18, Canterbury Woods parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. I appreciate ad value your feedback!

This week, our attention is directed toward the library. Here are a few questions you might want to consider asking your child about their experience with PAWS in the library.

  1. What do you do when the book you were hoping to checkout is not available?
  2. What steps do you take to ensure that library books are returned on time and in good condition?
  3. What is an example of something you do to keep the library clean and/or organized?

Fairfax County’s Funding of the FCPS Budget

The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from fiscal years (FY) 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in FY 2024. The County’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements.

If the county were to return to transferring 52.6% to FCPS for the upcoming year, that would equate to $63 million more to invest in excellence.

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

Thank you to the many families who joined us for our Power Of Words Family Night last night. We're excited to continue the conversation with our students and community. This week March 3-9 we celebrated National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

We are so grateful for our social workers at CWES Ms. Laura Dailey and Ms. JaQuese Hawkins. They play a vital role in nurturing the well-being and success of our students. They are compassionate listeners, trusted advocates, and tireless champions for those in need.

This week, our attention is directed towards recess. Here are a few questions you might want to consider asking your child about their experience with PAWS during recess.

  1. Can you think of a time during recess when you had to compromise with your friends about which game to play or how to play it?
  2. How do you feel when everyone in the group works together during recess activities? What are the benefits of playing cooperatively?
  3. Have you ever experienced a situation where someone didn't follow the rules during recess? How did it affect the game or the group dynamic?
  4. What are some ways you and your friends can show pride in your outdoor recess area?

Have a wonderful weekend,

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact Leslie Malkowski [email protected] or the front office staff regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

It is hard to believe it is already March and we have just a few weeks left in the third quarter! We hope many families will join us next Thursday, March 7th, for our Power of Words Family Night. We'd love for you to be there—please RSVP here. Together, we'll explore the important lessons we've been teaching our students about intent versus impact and exchange valuable resources. It's not only a chance to share insights but also to hear from other families about their experiences.

This week, our attention is directed towards the cafeteria. Here are a few questions you might want to consider asking your child about their experience with PAWS in the cafeteria.

  1. What are some strategies we can use to remind ourselves and others to speak quietly while in the cafeteria?
  2. Why is it important to clean up after yourself in the cafeteria?
  3. How does staying seated during meal times benefit everyone in the cafeteria?
  4. How can we work together as a community to uphold and reinforce expectations for behavior in the cafeteria?

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Mindy Milliron, and Kristi McGeehan

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

🎤 Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

Woodson Math Honor Society students ran an after-school event for 4th and 5th grade students this week. It was such a fun and exciting enrichment experience!

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

We're looking forward to seeing many of you at Bingo Night tonight for an evening of fun and camaraderie! It's a fantastic opportunity to catch up with familiar faces, share laughs, and enjoy each other's company outside the classroom. Thank you to all our volunteers who have worked so hard putting this event together!

Today we had an assembly where we reviewed our Student Rights and Responsibilities and the connection to our PAWS expectations. We hope you will continue to support the conversation at home.  Below are some questions you might considering asking your child about PAWS in the hallway.

  1. How do you travel through the school when you aren't with your teacher?
  2. Why is it important to keep quiet in the hallway?
  3. What are some examples of silent greetings you use?
  4. How can we demonstrate respect for our peers, teachers, and school environment in the hallway?

Message from our Get 2 Green Team:

As you're aware, our students put in tremendous effort to establish a watershed garden on our school premises last fall. Despite the diligent work of many students in spreading mulch around the garden, we still have a pile remaining. Now, we're reaching out to our community for assistance.

On Wednesday, February 28th, and Friday, March 1st, at 4:15 PM, the Get 2 Green Team will be in the garden, seeking volunteers to assist in moving the remaining mulch. Whether young or old, all are welcome to join us. We have equipment such as wheelbarrows, buckets, and shovels ready; all we need now are eager helpers.

Thank you for contributing to the growth of our garden and community!

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process.

Kindergarten students had so much fun celebrating the 100th day of school this week!

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

This week we celebrated the monumental milestone of the 100th day of school at CWES! This is a fun day for all, but mostly our students in kindergarten who celebrated learning, growth, and countless memories!

As we kick off the third quarter our teacher teams have taken time to look at student progress since the beginning of the school year. As a school more than 80% of our students have met their typical growth in reading and math based on midyear assessments which is a remarkable accomplishment. It speaks volumes about the dedication of our staff in providing high-quality instruction and support tailored to the needs of each student. It also highlights the commitment of our students to their own learning and the unwavering support of our families in fostering a positive learning environment at home. We are looking forward to continued growth throughout the remainder of the year.

As we mentioned we will share the PAWS expectations for a different area each week (see below for the visual of the poster). Below are some questions you might considering asking your child about PAWS in their classroom (learning space).

  1. When have you demonstrated a growth mindset this week?
  2. How do you keep your area clean in the classroom?
  3. Why is it important to participate actively in class?
  4. Can you recall a time this week you demonstrated kindness to a peer?

Have a wonderful weekend,

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

Next week February 5-9 is National School Counseling Week and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. Our school counselors, Becca Wilson and Kristen Mihalick, embody the spirit of compassion, guidance, and support. Their commitment to helping students navigate the challenges of academic, personal, and social growth is truly commendable. They go above and beyond to create a nurturing environment where our students can thrive.

School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS.

We are thrilled to share some exciting news with you! As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a positive and respectful learning environment, we are rolling out a new behavior matrix called PAWS, Cougars can Persevere, Accept responsibility, Work together, Show respect. PAWS represent our core values and expectations for student behavior across all areas of the school. Over the next few weeks we will share the expectations of each area, and encourage you to engage in conversations with your children at home. Together, we can reinforce these values and empower our students to become responsible, respectful, and collaborative members of our community.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Mindy Milliron, and Kristi McGeehan

🚍 Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to [email protected].

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

Time truly does fly, and here we are, halfway through the academic year! We have seen a tremendous amount of growth and moments of learning which are a testament to the hard work, dedication, and resilience of our students, teachers, staff, and families. We look forward to the continued success and growth that the remainder of the school year holds for our CWES community.

It was wonderful to see so many families on Wednesday night. We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who played a role in making Family Culture Night a success, we are grateful for everyone’s contributions. We were overjoyed to see families from different backgrounds come together to share their unique cultures, stories, and experiences. The variety of performances, displays, and interactive activities showcased the beauty of our diverse community. Our students were beaming with pride to share about their family’s cultures through food, cultural exhibits, and performances. We are already looking forward to next year!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Mindy Milliron, and Kristi McGeehan

Opioid Awareness

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit the FCPS website for more information.

Snow Day Fun! Principals love snow days too!

Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

I hope this message finds you warm, safe, and enjoying the winter wonderland outside! What a wild week we have had. We hope you are having another fantastic snow day, and we can't wait to hear from our students about their snowy adventures!  Whether you're building snowmen, having snowball fights, or simply cozying up indoors with a good book, we hope you find joy in this unexpected break.

We also wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible custodial team that work tirelessly to clear our community spaces. We appreciate their dedication for keeping our school community safe. With that said if you can assist in clearing the bus stops, we know that will be helpful for the safety of our students.

We hope to see many of our families at Family Culture Night on Wednesday, January 24th from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

To request a Sign Language Interpreter, please email Michele Bach-Hansen at [email protected]. To request a Cued Language Transliterator, please email Jo Woodzell at [email protected].

Please remember to stay safe and warm. If you have any snow day stories or photos, feel free to share them with us.

Have a wonderful weekend,
