We had a great turnout for our 2nd quarter family book club this week! Families enjoyed sharing a beloved family dish and talking about the books. We are already looking forward to the 3rd quarter!

Dear CWES Families,

After the recent bitter cold, we're all looking forward to some warmer temperatures next week, and hopefully, this snow will finally melt!

Last year we rolled out our behavior matrix called PAWS, Cougars can Persevere, Accept responsibility, Work together, Show respect. PAWS represent our core values and expectations for student behavior across all areas of the school. We're excited to announce 'PAWsitive Principal Recognition'! Starting in the third quarter, teachers will nominate one student per month who exemplifies our school's behavioral expectations in all areas. Identified students will be recognized on the morning news and receive a certificate to celebrate their achievements in their Tuesday folders. We are excited to continue promoting our work with positive behavior.

Tonight, we're excited to celebrate our diverse community at our Family Culture Night! Join us for an evening of delicious food as families share their favorite dishes from their cultures. We'll also enjoy wonderful performances and a parade to culminate the festivities. We can't wait to see you there!

📈 Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE.

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

Dear CWES Families,

We've had a fantastic first full week back in 2025! It's wonderful to see our students settling back into their routines and engaging enthusiastically in their learning.

The end of the second quarter is approaching; it is hard to believe. Throughout the next few weeks, students will be completing midyear assessments. These assessments will help us track student progress and guide our instruction moving forward.

With the cold weather upon us, please ensure your child comes to school prepared for all weather conditions. We've been enjoying limited outdoor recess when the weather permits, so please make sure your child has a warm coat, hat, gloves, and appropriate footwear. We hope everyone enjoys the upcoming long weekend and stays warm!

Yearbook Cover Contest CWES Go Club

Are your kids seeking a fun game that promotes cognitive development, cultural awareness, social skills, and emotional growth? CWES is launching a Go Club for 5th and 6th graders, starting January 16, 2025. The club will meet every Thursday after school for an hour. No experience with Go? Don't worry! Two CWES faculty members and a Go instructor will be there to teach your child. We’re also looking for parent volunteers to help with the club—no prior knowledge of Go required, as you'll learn alongside the students. Transition to Middle School - Message from Frost MS 🗺️ Dual Language Immersion Lottery Registration

Registration for the countywide lottery for FCPS’ Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program will open on Monday, January 13, 2025. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion program for the 2024-25 school year.

Dual Language Immersion is available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting held at the school site. Visit the Dual Language Immersion Program Registration page for a list of meetings by language offered.

Dear CWES Families,

It's been a wonderful week at CWES! Our students had a blast celebrating the holiday season with a fun-filled Spirit Week organized by our SCA. Classrooms were brimming with joy as students participated in festive activities. The SCA also hosted a successful donation drive for the Ronald McDonald House. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, students were able to put together over 80 care kits and collect many additional donations.

4th-6th Graders:

All 4th, 5th and 6th graders have been invited to participate in the annual Woodson Pyramid Area Chorus day! The event takes place at Frost Middle School on Saturday January 11th, 9:45 AM-1PM. Students will learn music from the Frost and Woodson Chorus teachers, play games, sing and be served pizza! It is a fun way to meet students from all over the pyramid and have fun singing together as a community! Congratulations to Jennifer Rose, who has been named the Outstanding Teacher for the Woodson Pyramid! This well-deserved recognition highlights her dedication and impact on our students.

We bid a fond farewell to Martha Berlowitz, a beloved educator in our deaf/hard of hearing program for nearly 30 years. We celebrated her contributions this week and wish her all the best in her retirement. She will be deeply missed.

Transition to Middle School - Message from Frost MS Middle School Start Time Study

⏰ Update on Potential Changes to Middle School Start Times

At Tuesday’s School Board work session, staff from Prismatic Services, Inc., presented options for adjusting start times at FCPS middle schools. As a reminder, Prismatic is charged with developing an action plan to help the School Board reach its goal of starting middle school at or after 8 a.m.

The presentation includes five options for adjusting middle school start times based on the consultant’s analysis from community forums, surveys, and interviews with staff, parents, associations, and other groups. The School Board will provide next steps to the superintendent.

Reminder: Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Andrea Warren ([email protected]) and Erin Quinn ([email protected]) no later than December 15, 2024.

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually. Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. It is hard to believe we only have 10 school days until winter break. We have a variety of fun activities happening, so be sure to look through this entire newsletter!

This past week we celebrated Inclusive Schools Week (December 2-6). Throughout the week, CWES highlighted the diversity of our school community by celebrating the theme “Every Voice Matters.” This theme emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing the unique perspectives and experiences of all students. Ask your students what they learned this week!

The SCA will be collecting donations to make Care Kits for the Ronald McDonald House of Northern Virginia. Items will be collected now through December 18th, and they will be organized to create Care Kits to bring some comfort and joy to the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House located on the Inova Fairfax campus. Please see flyer for a list of needed items.

AAP Full Time Referrals

Reminder: Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Andrea Warren ([email protected]) and Erin Quinn ([email protected]).

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

SEL Screener Results

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Available in SIS ParentVUE

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

Bodhi Day, Friday, December 8, is the Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni), experienced enlightenment, also known as bodhi in Sanskrit and Pali.

What a fantastic day at CWES! It was such a joy to see so many families at our luncheon today. We are deeply grateful for our amazing school community and want to take a moment to thank each of you.

Our school isn’t just a place to learn—it’s a thriving, supportive community built on collaboration, dedication, and care. To our incredible staff, students, and supportive families, thank you for making CWES so special!

Thank you to those who submitted a photo or drawing of their hero for Veteran’s Day! If your photo or artwork is irreplaceable and you would like it returned to you (e.g. a polaroid), please contact Becca Wilson ([email protected]) prior to November 26 so that we can send it home in your child’s Tuesday folder. Remaining papers will be recycled after Thanksgiving Break.

Book Fair:

It’s book fair time! Canterbury Woods will be having the fall book fair from Monday, December 2nd through Friday, December 6th. The fair will be open during school hours during the week and open for after school shopping on Tuesday, December 3rd.

Family Book Club 2nd Quarter!

We are excited to be exploring Social-Emotional Learning this year with a research-based curriculum! Our students and teachers are learning utilizing the Second Step program from the Committee for Children. The Second Step programs are designed to help children thrive and be more successful in school—ultimately setting them up to be thoughtful and productive adults. Our students in first through sixth grade started participating in Second Step lessons in October. To learn more about what is involved in this program, join us for an information session on Tuesday, December 3rd at 5 pm in the Cafeteria. The Book Fair will be open that night, so you can go shopping before or after the session!

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Boundary Review Community Meeting

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Monday, December 2, 6:30-8 p.m., at Westfield High School Cafeteria.

Cell Phone Feedback Opportunity

Student Feedback Opportunity for FCPS Cell Phone Policy and SR&R

FCPS is working with K12 Insight to host a community forum for families, staff members, and students to provide feedback on the school division’s cell phone policies and practices, and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. FCPS is looking for more student participants (grades 3-12) to help ensure diverse perspectives from our community.

The community forum will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center. If your student is interested in providing feedback, please visit the Cell Phone Policy Forum registration page to learn more. Families must register their child by Monday, November 25.

❄️ Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

Dear CWES Families,

This week we celebrate the important work school psychologists do to help all students thrive. We would like to take a moment to recognize and thank our amazing school psychologist, Marisa Maslek. Her dedication to our students' mental health and well-being is invaluable, and she plays a crucial role in supporting our positive school environment. We are fortunate to have her at CWES!

In October, students in grades K-6 worked with their teachers and AARTs to build their strength around the Critical and Creative Thinking strategy of Point of View. Students learned how considering multiple perspectives can help them find better solutions and be a better community member. To keep using these skills at home, try doing the following:

Create diary entries of an historical event from the perspective of someone who lived then.
When they are discussing their opinion, have them practice switching stances.
Ask your student questions such as:
- How would_____ view this?
- How would this look to a ____?
- If ___ were a___, how would they feel?
- What would someone with the opposite opinion think?

Reminder: Monday, November 18th is an early release students will be dismissed at 1:05. As previously mentioned, students will be dismissed in the same manner as they were on October 21st. If your student is staying teachers confirmed this week. If there are any changes, please call the office at (703) 764-5600.

This week, we began the second quarter with weather that felt more like summer than fall! November is National Family Engagement Month, and we hope you were able to connect with your child's teacher for the first-quarter conference to discuss your child’s progress.

National Family Engagement Month highlights the important role that families play as a child’s first teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Research spanning over 35 years shows that students thrive when families are actively engaged in their education. Family engagement is a shared responsibility among home, school, and community. We strive to provide many opportunities to support family engagement at CWES, with one of the favorites being our Fall Lunch on Friday, November 22nd. This week, a fact sheet was sent home in Tuesday folders with adjusted lunch times. If you are interested in purchasing a lunch, you can do so through your child’s MySchoolBucks account. Please reach out if you have any questions.

This year all students in kindergarten through sixth grade are focusing on two Portrait of a Graduate attributes: Collaborator and Goal-Directed and Resilient within specials. Our specialists are doing this great work to help our students reflect on how they are being a collaborator and/or goal directed and resilient. Please view the skills listed below that your children are reflecting on during specials. To support your child, ask them how they are a collaborator? How do you know you are a collaborator? How can you prove it? Why is this skill important?

Boundary Review

📍 Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

IEP Palooza

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

Dear CWES Families,

As we wrap up the first quarter and a fantastic Spirit Week, we're filled with excitement and pride for all that our students have accomplished. Our Storybook Character Day was the perfect way to end a fun-filled week! At CWES, we remain dedicated to fostering a supportive learning environment that empowers our students to reach their full potential. We're truly impressed by the growth and achievements our students have demonstrated, both in and out of the classroom. We can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Nominations are now open for the Outstanding Employee Awards! To submit a nomination for a Canterbury Woods Elementary Outstanding Employee in one of the categories below, please complete the nomination through this google form. You may nominate one employee at our school per category.

All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category. The google form link has more information regarding the criteria for each of these awards and the eligibility requirements.

Quarter End, Early Release, Diwali/Dia de los Muertos and All Saints Day, Student Holidays

Thursday, October 31, is the last day of the first quarter, and a two-hour early release for students. Friday, November 1, is a holiday this year for Diwali and Dia de los Muertos and All Saints Day. All schools and offices will be closed. Schools are closed for students on Monday, November 4, for a school planning day, and Tuesday, November 5, for a teacher workday. Impact Aid

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Woodson High School Fall Fest

Woodson’s Annual Fall Festival

Saturday, October 26th from 11am - 2pm Woodson HS. There will be games, crafts, a moon bounce, candy, and a trunk or treating activity. Trunk or Treating - which is like trick or treating, but it will be in the parking lot outside of the softball field around door 5 and clubs will give out candy/food to the local feeder school/preschool students! Dear CWES Families,

We had a fantastic week at CWES! Check out some of the fun we had in the photos.

Our next early release is on Monday, October 21st. Teachers have confirmed with families who indicated their student requires supervision until 4:05. All students who attend afternoon SACC will be dismissed at 1:05 to SACC. If there is a change in your child's after-school plans, please contact the school office at (703) 764-5600 as soon as possible.

We had a wonderful turnout at our first parent coffee of the school year, where we discussed the topic of beginning-of-the-year assessments and how that data is utilized. Please take a look at the FCPS resource. This site includes information on reading and writing home resources as well as answering frequently asked question.

We invite you to share your thoughts and experiences through this survey. Your insights will help us plan our parent coffees and ensure we are providing the best possible support for your student and family.

Don't miss our Veterans Day breakfast on Friday, November 8th. All military families are welcome! Please RSVP using the link in the calendar above. You should have received a "My Veteran" sheet this week. If a family member or someone special to you has served or is currently serving in the military, we'd love to honor them on Veterans Day! Please fill out the form and include a photo. We'll display them in the hall to celebrate their service

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will host immunization clinics for any FCPS student age 18 or younger at Frost Middle School on Monday, October 28, and Tuesday, October 29, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students age 18 or younger to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.

Students age 19 and older may access free immunizations at their middle/high school immunization clinic, the Fairfax County Health Department or through other community resources.

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Each week, the admin team has been recognizing students who demonstrate our behavior expectations (persevere, accept responsibility, work together, show respect) by putting up our "PAWS" on the morning announcements. This week, our news crew wanted to recognize our awesome custodians by putting up their "PAWS" as well!

Our 2nd annual Fun Run was a huge success! Students had a blast participating and enjoying the music. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible!

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our PTA for organizing another incredible Fun Run! The event was a tremendous success, filled with laughter and excitement. Our students and staff had an absolute blast participating and cheering each other on.

A special shout-out goes to our amazing PE teachers, Ms. Bruce and Mr. Healey, for their dedication and enthusiasm in making the Fun Run such a memorable experience. Their energy and support were invaluable.

If you haven't already, please consider donating to support our school. Every contribution helps fund important programs and resources for our students.

National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
